"CHARTER 21" COUNTRYSIDE MANIFESTO
FOR 21^ST CENTURY POLAND

We, the undersigned, believe that the industrial food production practices now causing major problems to other countries are also a big danger for Poles and the Polish countryside; therefore, whether or not Poland joins the EU

The Polish government should:

• Immediately start to implement a conscious policy whose goal is to protect and promote the values of the Polish countryside, in opposition to rapidly spreading globalisation.
• Recognise that the way to ensure optimum public and environmental health is through promoting a diet based on high quality local foods, and a countryside rich in natural bio-diversity.
• Strengthen and support strategies that keep a high percentage of Polish farmers on the land, help maintain the traditional mosaic of family farms and develop strong local and regional markets.
• Recognise the economic and social benefits of eco-tourism, renewable energy, ecological forestry and the rich landscape of the Polish countryside and support them in practice.

The Polish government should not:

• Make the same "restructuring" mistakes as other European countries, thus stripping the land of its local resources and bankrupting hundreds of thousands of Polish family farmers.
• Allow the sale and production of GMOs which are already discredited in the eyes of science and rejected by discerning consumers across the world.
• Allow factory farming methods of the food production.

We call on the Polish Government

• to save Poland's unique geographical and historical strength and build it so that will become a symbol of hope to the millions around the world whose survival depends upon their work on the land.
• to create a new vision of agriculture to help reverse the rapidly approaching collapse of global biodiversity caused by the 'urbanisation' of world's rural populations.
